Privacy Policy
EFFECTIVE AUGUST 27, 2026
Sous is a recipe app made by Ryan Allred, a solo developer. This policy explains exactly what data Sous handles, where it goes, and how you can delete it. The short version: Sous stores the recipes you import under an anonymous account, sends the recipe text or photo to OpenAI once to structure it, and does nothing else with your data. No ads, no tracking, no analytics, no selling data — ever.
What Sous collects
- Recipes you import. When you paste recipe text or a recipe link, Sous stores it — the original text or link plus the structured version (ingredients, steps, timers, tags) — so your recipe library syncs and persists.
- An anonymous account ID. Sous creates a random, invisible account the first time it opens. It has no email, name, phone number, or password. It exists only so your recipes belong to you.
- Conversion timestamps. Each time you convert a recipe, Sous records the time of the conversion (nothing about its content) to enforce fair-use limits.
That's the complete list. Sous does not collect your name, email, contacts, location, browsing history, device identifiers for advertising, or anything else. If you import a recipe by photo, that photo is sent to OpenAI the same way the text is, once, to read the recipe off the page; Sous does not keep the photo.
Who processes your data
Two service providers process data on Sous's behalf, and both provide protections for your data equal to or greater than those described in this policy:
- Supabase (supabase.com) hosts the database where your recipes and anonymous account live, protected by row-level security so only your device's session can read your recipes.
- OpenAI (openai.com) receives the recipe text, the text of the recipe page you linked, or the photo of the page you took one time, at import, to restructure it into guided steps. Nothing identifying you is sent with it — no account ID, no email, no device information; just the recipe text or photo. Under OpenAI's API terms, this data is not used to train their models and is retained for up to about 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deleted.
There is no chatbot and no ongoing AI processing — the AI runs once per imported recipe, and Sous asks for your permission in the app before the first conversion.
What Sous doesn't do
- No advertising and no ad networks.
- No analytics or behavioral tracking of any kind.
- No selling, renting, or sharing your data with anyone beyond the two processors above.
- No tracking across other apps or websites (Sous contains no tracking code at all).
Where data lives on your phone
Cooking progress (which step you're on, checked ingredients, your scale setting) and preferences are stored only on your device. Timer notifications are local — they never touch a server.
Deleting your data
Because accounts are anonymous, we cannot look up "your" account from an email — deletion happens from your device, which is the only thing that holds the keys to it.
Payments
Subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple through your App Store account. Sous never sees your payment details.
Children
Sous is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information that identifies anyone, of any age.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
